Passive House Standards

Passive house - (German Passivhaus, English passive house) is the result of a set of technological steps, and, first of all, design. The main feature of the passive house is the lack of energy for its heating from the outside. This is achieved through effective thermal insulation of the building, a well-designed ventilation system with energy recovery.

The indicator of energy efficiency of the facility is the loss of thermal energy per square meter (kWh / m²) per year or in the heating season. The average is 100-120 kWh / m². Energy-saving is considered a building where this figure is below 40 kWh / m². For European countries, this figure is even lower - about 10 kWh / m².

The reduction in energy consumption is achieved primarily due to a reduction in the heat loss of the building.


In simple words, a passive house is a house so warm that its energy consumption costs no more than $ 150 per 100 m2 per year. This house was properly designed, has excellent insulation, ventilation and is heated by alternative energy sources.

Despite its name, the technology of building a passive house does not provide for flaws in the design. Such houses are no worse than the usual, on the contrary, all modern passive houses are built on modern architectural projects, where design plays an important role. Particular attention in such houses is given to the facade, roof and windows, which in principle is the image of the house from the outside.


Another myth is the allegedly inflated price for the construction of such houses. In any construction, prices grow where there is little control, there are unnecessary costs and there is no design of the project. A passive house can not be built without designing, and where the project is, there is order. In practice, it turns out that building an energy efficient house is even cheaper than usual. Here is a small example.

Imagine that in the same area 2 identical houses are being built - one in the old-fashioned manner, with minimal insulation (10-15 cm), the second with a Neopor® insulation 30cm (which equals 36cm mineral wool or polystyrene foam).
